LASER SKIN PEELING

Erbium "Fresh Peel" and CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Why "peel" the skin?

Normal skin is renewing itself very slowly by the surface cells dying and wearing away, while newer cells replace them from below from below. Aging, sun exposure and other things cause skin damage in the form of thinning, discoloration, dryness, roughness, wrinkles etc. If the skin surface can be damaged in a controlled manner, then its natural healing response can be stimulated to speed this up, creating many more new cells of better quality. The process is called exfoliation. Exfoliation can be done for cosmetic purposes in many, many ways.

When aggressive methods (stronger acids, abrasives, lasers) cause skin surface injury, then the damaged cells can be seen to peel away, usually in a flaking manner. The peeling simply signifies the result of, hopefully, successful exfoliation.

Why peel with a laser?

Precision laser light energy seems to have the ability to create more "desirable" damage and less "undesirable" damage than acids, abrasives, or other lasers. The recovery and benefits happen faster with fewer problems.

The Erbium:Yag laser:

We use this to perform the "Fresh Peel" or "Micro-Laser Peel". The peel is very shallow, which is important for safety and rapid recovery. This surface damage (peeling) causes the epithelium to repair and renew itself, adding new collagen & elastin, while discarding older unwanted cells. A certain maximum can only be applied at 1 session; therefore, a series of 3-5 treatments is needed @ 1 month intervals to obtain full benefit.

The "Fresh Peel" has demonstrated effectiveness for wrinkling, unwanted pigmentation, active acne, acne scarring, rosacea, and keratoses. We have had rather unbelievable results for a condition known as melasma, the splotchy, freckly brown pigment which accumulates on the faces of ladies in response to birth control pills and childbearing. We have seen 50-80% disappearance almost immediately! An Erbium series improves softness, smoothness, and clarity of the face, neck, chest, and hands. It is not used elsewhere.

What to expect each treatment:

There is wide variation in the discomfort during and following the Fresh Peel. The usual case has only a few areas which are uncomfortable. There is an immediate mild sunburn feeling which goes away in a few hours. Normal activity and makeup can be resumed when desired. Days 2 & 3 have skin discoloration then peeling on days 4 & 5. The process is complete then and has needed almost no special care.

CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing:

The CO2 laser is the most aggressive thing that can be done for photo-aged skin. It should be reserved for advanced conditions, and undertaken only after a thorough discussion of its risks, benefits, and post-op healing process. I regard the CO2 as about the only treatment that truly improves wrinkles! The "Fresh Peel" improves wrinkling…but not to the extent of the CO2. Almost all ads which claim to improve wrinkles are just that...claims!
