CHEMICAL PEELING and EXFOLIATION
A fundamental concept of skin care in which the
surface cells are injured intentionally in order
to stimulate the natural healing response from below.
Older cells are replaced by healthy new ones and
things like collagen and elastin are renewed. Have
you ever noticed how soft and smooth a mans facial
skin is-in the area he uses a razor blade? He is
exfoliating daily. We use a wide range of acids
of varying strengths for in-office treatments. Alpha
and Beta Hydroxy acids can be used as home-care
products. The most aggressive exfoliation possible
is done using phenolic acid, old time burr-wheel
dermabrasion, or Co2 laser resurfacing.
MICRODERMABRASION
Microdermabrasion is a rapid, dry, and painless
method for removing a small amount of the top layer
of the skin (the epidermis). Mostly, it is the stratum
corneum that is taken off, which results in immediate
softening-since this layer, when thickened by photoaging,
causes roughness. What actually happens is that
a “localized sandstorm” moves across the skin when
abrasive particles (aluminum oxide) are incorporated
into a jet of air.
It is relatively light treatment, which takes about
15-20 minutes. Exfoliation occurs stimulating some
beneficial cell turnover. Conditions, which are
treatable by microdermabrasion, include:
• Oily, acne prone skin
• Roughness
• Mild acne scarring
• Superficial discoloration/age spots
• Blackheads/whiteheads
• Skintags, irregularities
• Large pores
• Fine wrinkles
It is often used ‘off the face’ for areas such
as the neck-chest (declotté), hands, and arms. A
treatment temporarily enhances the penetration of
skin care products and medications (‘cosmecuticals’)
since the natural barrier is reduced.
A typical treatment creates mild redness, which
resolves within 24 hours, and does not interrupt
normal activities. It has been termed ‘the lunch-time
peel’.
VASCU-TOUCH ELECTROCAUTERY
Small red or blue unwanted blood vessels can {usually) be easily destroyed by using the tiny VASCU-TOUCH coagulator. Cherry Angiomas and tiny spider veins respond well. Large and deeper veins are not canidates
